Local Treasures
Adept at bridging the fusion gaps

By Robin Tolleson

The talent and diversity of the Bay Area world jazz musicians, as well as their dedication to their art, is plain to hear on several recently released independent CDs that stand up with any of the best instrumental fusion acts going. These were released to the public with little or no record company support.
Marcia Migét is a Marin treasure-a dedicated music teacher (San Pedro Elementary School, Miracle Music School and private lessons) who is also a world class player, burning on the keyboards, saxes and flute.
She proves hereself with an all-star band including trombonist Wayne Wallace, trumpeter John Worley, keyboardist Frank Martin and Rebeca Mauleon, percussionist John Santos, drummer Paul Van Wageningen, and bassits David Belove and Gary Brown. Ms. Miget is also an accomplished songwriter. She performed and original composition from the CD,
“We Are the Children,” at the 1994 Bammies with a group of elementary and middle school students representing Communities in Schools. On “Inside Story,” she crafts a cohesive, sharply angled soprano solo, and drives the point home on tenor on “Go For It,” a track reminiscent of some of the best Marcus Miller/David Sanborn jams. She turns
Wayne Shorter’s “ “Hear Us” (lyric version of “Footprints”) into a Latin-funk mix worthy of Flora and Airto, with a positive vocal spin. John Santos, who recently released “Machete,” a wonderful CD on Green Linnet with Cuban bassist Cachao, trumpeter Chocolate, and many members of his Machete ensemble, adds some of his finest spices to the action. Ms. Migét’s arrangement of “Swing Low” is a gospel funk beauty that will have us brethren and sistren stomping our feet. And her pure touch on piano is heard on the spellbinding “Moonbeams.”
