On Sunday June 10, 2007 for the 12th year North Bay musician, Marcia Migét will be performing 1:45 pm on the Main Stage, Mission and ‘C’ Streets, at San Rafael’s Italian Street Painting Festival.
A ‘Maestra’ of many elements her most recent public performance with Voices of Latin Rock legends Abel Sanchez, Jorge Santana and Malo was at the Cesar Chavez Arizona Celebration. Saxophonist, pianist, flutist, educator and Director of Miraflores Academie, Marcia Miget’s performance pedigree includes multiple appearances with Carlos Santana, Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra, the James Cleveland Choir, Montclair Women’s Big Band and Wayne Wallace’s Rhythm and Rhyme.
Composer, ‘session player’ Ms. Miget has performed with legends such as Freddy Redd, Buddy Baker, Kenny Barron, Frank Foster, Pete Escovedo, Donald Byrd, Tyrone Hill of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, Freddy Redd, Larry Ridley, Gath Weber, Dartanyan Brown and the Iowa Hall of Fame All-Stars. 2006 saw her at the Fillmore Jazz Festival with David Hardiman’s San Francisco Big Band Allstars; 2003 through 2005 with the AAJC (African American Jazz Caucus) Dance Band at the International Association of Jazz Educators' Convention; in 2004 as Featured Artist with the AAJC/HBCU (Historically Black Colleges' and Universities) Allstar Big Band; with Dr. Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra playing the Monterey, Stern Grove and Fillmore Jazz Festivals. She has been featured with the 2004 Historically Black College All-Star Band, African American Jazz Caucus Big Band, Montclair Woman’s Jazz Orchestra, the featured performer James Cleveland Choir, Lighthouse Singers, and performed on MTV with Ricki Lee Smith.

NORTH BAY SAXOPHONIST TO PERFORM AT CESAR CHAVEZ ARIZONA CELEBRATION MULTI-BAND EVENT
Invited by Project Coordinator and Voices of Latin Rock legend guitarist Abel Sanchez Marin musician Marcia Miget will be part of a band including the likes of Jorge Santana and Malo at the Cesar Chavez Arizona Celebration Saturday March 31 and Sunday April 1. Featuring War, Michael Salgado, Graciela Beltran and others the event will take place on three stages. Jorge Santana, Abel Sanchez and Rudy Chavez Medina collaborated on writing Song for Cesar to honor the late Cesar Chavez’s strength and perseverance. Proceeds from the event go to the California farm workers and their families who have been affected by the recent freeze.

On Sunday, October 8 at 1:15 PM multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and educator, North Bay's Marcia Miget will perform with David Hardiman and the San Francisco Allstar Big Band featuring tenor player Charles McPherson at the Fillmore Big Band Dance Festival and BBQ Cookoff, Kimball Park on Steiner St. between Geary Blvd. and Ellis St., San Francisco. This Free Outdoor Concert features top Bay Area Jazz, Blues and Afro Cuban Big Bands and will have a large dance floor for dancing. For the 33rd Annual International Association of Jazz Educators’ Convention in NY Marica Migét, Director of Miraflores Music Academy, decided to commission one of Carl ‘Djinn’ Lewis’ JazzIcons and donate it to the IAJE’s Global Outreach Fund.
Based in the Bay Area since 1988, Ms. Migét has established of the preeminent private schools creating the foundation for some of Marin County’s best musical talent. Miraflores Music Academié has produced the likes of, Jeff Derby, Jaimeo Brown, Alex Baky, J.J.Byars, Robby Marshall, Isabella Quereshi, Zach Gunsell, Bram Kincheloe, Elecia Strauss, Seth Paris, Kristina Hoffman, Jarrett Cherner and Salvador Santana. A ''performing' artist, Carl Lewis’ imagery is housed in the collections of such institutions as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (his alma mater), Southern Methodist University, Texas Instruments, the Brooklyn Museum, the Schomburg Collection for Research into Black Culture of the New York City Public Library, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Amon Carter Museum. Selected in 1993 he was one of ten artists included in a Curriculum Guide for the Smithsonian Institution's African American Museum Project. Co-author of Lumiere Captureé (Captured Light), an overview of the history of laser imagery as art, his energies are currently involved in imajinnWEST, utilizing and designing products evolving from the sculptural light illusions he photographed. A Fellow of the International Biographical Center (Cambridge) and referenced in a number of publications, e.g. African American Lives by Henry Louis Gates and Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Who's Who in the South and Southwest (24th through Millennium Editions), Black Photographers 1940-1988; a Bio-Bibliography, An Illustrated Survey of Contemporaries, and Deborah Wills' Reflections in Black; Black Photographers 1940 to the Present.
The JazzIcons facet of Carl’s work combines photographs of Elder musicians with jissereau laser imagery manipulated via computer, the resultant print is then finished with an Old World surface treatment like goldleaf or eggshell. For the IAJE donation Marcia and Carl selected Dr. Donald Byrd because of his innovation and his Blackbyrds impact on the urban youth of the 1960s.
“For us the connection between the visual and aural worlds seemed a perfect match.,” Lewis and Migét say in harmony, “With the school’s population as young as they are we’re always searching for modalities to keep their attention. Animation and our prospective distance learning programs are next. Wait ‘til you see it.”
With more than 8,000 members in 40 countries, IAJE is the leading authority and primary voice for the promotion of jazz. Recently returning from a European tour with Sun Ra’s Arkestra, bassist Kash Killion’s concert history includes performances with Donald Byrd, George Cables, Billy Higgins, Reggie Workman as well as being an integral member of the Arkestra. A consummate session musician he has recorded Afro-Cuban music with several salsa groups and just finished a film score with Tom Waits. His latest project, Lost Legacy of the Cello, is currently available through kkillion@four-four.com. Having studied with the great Indian musician, Ali Akbar Khan he plays assorted Middle Eastern stringed instruments such as, serengi ditruba and esraj, as well as cello and bass.
Born in Alton, Illinois (Miles Davis’ home town) Kash has played extensively with such icons as Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, Julius Hemphill, Reggie Workman, Sun Ra, Butch Morris and George Lewis. His interest in avant garde jazz was ignited by Sun Ra in 1978, and further heightened by meeting and playing with Pharoah Sanders. A composer and multi-instrumentalist, he’s composed and performed with dance troupes and poets including Amiri Baraka, Alice Walker, Quincy Troupe.
Vocalist and Aural Colourist with Miget’s mee-j band, ‘Djinn’ Carl Lewis’ career as a musician began as a member of the prestigious Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine (New York). Upon graduating he then sang with the Little Church around the Corner (the Actors’ Church) performing Broadway show tunes along with religious music. He then became a member of the Pen and Scroll Drum Corps performing in numerous NY events like the Thanksgiving Day Parade. Since the 1970’s he has been primarily involved in the visual arts. With images in six museum collections his line of limited edition clothing is set to premiere this Fall. President of the Crown Family Unity Programs, he has been involved in every aspect of designing and implementing innovative and creative cultural, educational and recreational programs for youth and their families. Diversity, social evolution, education and cultural integrity are integral elements to the programs. The programs use contemporary pastimes such as inline skating and an educational, Humanities-based approach to presenting them as “edu-fun” after- or in-school programming in urban neighborhoods. “After a twenty-five year career as a professional visual artist it is indescribable to be returning to my first love, music.”, comments Djinn,
Set Drummer and Master Instructor, Sly Randolph, has been playing drums since the age of ten and teaching from the age of fourteen. His genesis originates from assisting when he was with the Manhattanaires and N.Y. Skyliners Drum and Bugle Corps. Primarily a jazz drummer, Bernard Purdy’s ex-understudy Sly has played sessions with the likes of Manu Dibango, Wilson Pickett and Migét. His performance pedigree includes a range of individuals including Robert and Bill Stewart, the Red Hot Skilletlickers, LaVey and done Broadway shows, the likes of Hair, Two Gentlemen from Verona, Jesus Christ Superstar, Raisin, and Timbuktu with Eartha Kitt. His students run the gamut from children to working professionals the like of Maste Drummer Jaimeo Brown. When asked why he does it, Sly’s simple statement was, “I just love music, period.”
Head of Marin Academy’s Music Department since 1990, guitarist Bob Schleeter is a thirty-year music veteran. A composer who’s had four musicals produced throughout New England and the West Coast, the Boston Globe called Sara’s Jukebox, "A hit parade of music ... the songs are tantalizingly diverse, yet widely appealing.” Bob has performed as a sideman with a diverse group of musicians, including The Drifters, Del Shannon, Clarence Bell and Shana Morrison. After successive visits to Bahia, Brazil and Havana (Cuba) Bob co-founded Marin-based jazz/soul/latin group, The Company She Keeps, contributing original songs and arrangement ideas to the group.

“The more we surveyed our cultural landscape the more societal erosion we saw.”, states the team of Marcia Migét. “For us the Arts offer the only recourse to mitigate this malaise. With important facets of the education of our youth being disregarded we have no other choice, but to preserve this ‘Natural Resource’ when so much is at risk.” The lovechild of these two San Francisco Bay creatives is Passing the Baton: the Miget-Redd Sessions 1©, a musical recording project pairing emerging and mid-career musical artists with ‘Elder’ jazz musicians in an effort to educate younger generations to the history, techniques and challenges is being made available for download on the website http://www.mee-j.com. The artist-driven project allows for an active reconnection to cultural aspects that the producers feel have been ‘marginalized’. As the project evolves there will be an animated component viewable on the site though not downloadable. All imagery will be on the enhanced dvd, Passing the Baton: Sessions with American Classical Masters©.
Veteran producer, Miraflores Music CEO Migét has researched and culled a list of potential ‘players’. The initial project is a live recording with pianist/composer Freddie Redd. Referencing the influences of Bud Powell and Thelonius Monk Freddie started out with Cootie Williams and played with jazz giants the likes of Art Blakey, Charles Mingus in the Mingus Big Band, Tina Brooks and Jackie McClean.
Evolving from a rich musical heritage, for over three decades performer/composer/educator la Maestra Marcia has evidenced her unique ability to ‘pass on’ information and experiences to audiences, students and peers alike. A past Artist-in-Residence for the National Endowment of the Art’s ‘Jazz Artist in Schools’ Program. Her talents in music were evidenced through her study of piano, saxophone and flute from a very early age. The featured performer at the 2004 International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in NY where she played with the Historically Black College All Star Jazz Ensemble, Marcia will once again join some of the jazz greats in the African American Jazz Caucus Big Band in Los Angeles in January.
One of the most sought after master music instructors in the San Francisco Bay Area, 2003 saw Marcia chosen as Project Chairwoman for the African American Jazz Caucus K-12 Alternative Jazz Ed Concepts and Venues Project. Over the last fifteen years Miraflores Music Academié has nurtured talents the likes of pianist Anne Rainwater, baritone saxophonist JoAnna Hansen, pianist/dancer Isabella Quereshi, drummer Jaimeo Brown, saxophonists Alex Baky, J.J. Byars, Robbie Marshall and Elecia Strauss, keyboardist Salvador Santana, Bram Kincheloe drums, keyboardist Jessica Dell’Era, look for the names and ‘take-a-listen’.
With performances this year have been at Monterey, Vallejo, Stern Grove and Fillmore Jazz Festivals, the multi-instrumentalist’s pedigree includes such notables as Carlos Santana, Buddy Baker, Freddy Redd, Kenny Barron, Eddie Moore, Pete Escovedo, Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra, John Santos and Machete, Larry Ridley, Carl Perazzo, Phish and Jaimeo Brown (to name a select few).

Migét TO PERFORM WITH AAJC BIG BAND AT 2005 IAJE CONVENTION

2004’s featured performer at the International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in NY, Marcia Migét will once again join some of the jazz greats in the African American Jazz Caucus Big Band. At the 2003 Toronto convention she performed in a tribute jam to Oscar Peterson. Last year the North Bay teacher/performer/composer played with the Historically Black College All Star Jazz Ensemble in a tribute to Benny Carter. ‘la Maestra’ Marcia, Master Instructor of Miraflores Music Academié, has been teaching and performing in the Bay Area since 1988. The last fifteen or so years have provided her an opportunity to work with some of the nation’s most talented youth. Evolving from a rich musical heritage (her family of musicians performed extensively throughout the Midwest), her talents in music were evidenced through her study of piano, saxophone and flute from a very early age, she actually began teaching at an early age. Receiving her Bachelor of Music from Drake University she was selected to be an Artist-in-Residence for the National Endowment of the Art’s ‘Jazz Artist in Schools’ Program. The residencies ranged from the Blackfoot Indian Reservation in Montana to dance/jazz clinics in New Orleans and Phoenix to teacher trainings at Duke University and extended residencies at the University of Montana and University of Wisconsin (Madison). Her extensive musical background includes Artist/Composer in Residence at San Pedro Elementary School from 1991-1997 with a highlight the performance at the 1992 Bay Area Music Awards with her Bay Area students.
As Master Teacher and Director of Curriculum at Miracle Music School she developed curriculum that included parental involvement in a child’s musical education. On Saturday evening November 27, 2004 for two sets beginning at 11 pm, Bay Area jazz player, saxophonist, Marcia Migét, will perform at San Francisco’s Last Day Saloon (406 Clement Street) with Sun Ra Arkestra members, trombonist Tyrone Hill and bassist Kash Killion. They will be joined by local performers, drummer, Michael Aragon and pianist, George Khouri, in a rare club appearance as the Deep Space Posse.
A multi-instrumentalist, composer and educator, la Maestra Marcia Migét is a musician whose most recent performances this year include the International Association of Jazz Education Convention as the featured artist, Monterey, Vallejo, Stern Grove and Fillmore Jazz Festivals. Her performance pedigree includes such notables as Carlos Santana, Chick Corea, Freddy Redd, Kenny Barron, Pete Escovedo, Anthony Brown and the Asian American Orchestra, John Santos and Machete, Larry Ridley, Buddy Baker, and Jaimeo Brown (to name a select few). w For the last thirty or so years Philadelphia native trombonist Tyrone Hill, whose style embraces both the creative precision of Julian Priester and the bleats of Roswell Rudd, has been performing with th e SunRa Arkesstra. . In addition to recording with the Arkestra, he also leads the the Philadelphia Deep Space Posse features leading edge talent like Elliot Levin, Rick Ianacone, Howard Cooper, Calvin Weston, Bobby Zankel, Freddie Paulin, and others and has numerous solo recordings available on Cadence Records. Returning from a recent Milan tour with the Arkestra, Brass Section leader and arranger Mr. Hill also performed with NRBQ and Yo lo Tengo. Tyrone holds this thought close, “’I think about what Sun Ra said, that what we gotta do for people is ... tune them up.’"
Born in Alton, Illinois (Miles Davis’ home town) Kash Killion has played extensively with such icons as Cecil Taylor, John Zorn, Julius Hemphill, Reggie Workman, Sun Ra, Butch Morris and George Lewis. His interest in avant garde jazz was ignited by Sun Ra in 1978, and further heightened by meeting and playing with Pharoah Sanders. A composer and multi-instrumentalist , he composes and performs for other artists, dance troupes and poets including Amiri Baraka, Alice Walker, Quincy Troupe. He’s recorded Afro-Cuban music with several salsa groups and studied with the great Indian musician, Ali Akbar Khan. Playing cello, bass and assorted Middle Eastern stringed instruments such as, serengi and esraj, Kash’s concert history includes performances with Donald Byrd, George Cables, Billy Higgins, Reggie Workman as well as the Sun Ra Arkestra. A consummate session musician his new solo project, Killion’s Trillions, is currently available.
For this special fundraiser the Deep Space Posse will be joined by some very special guests including Michael Aragon on drums, George Khouri on piano.

The featured performer at 2003’s International Association of Jazz Educators Convention in NY is Bay Area’s Marcia Migét. President of Miraflores Music School, Marcia has been teaching and performing in the Bay Area since 1988. January will find the multi-instrumentalist soloing in an original musical work by Wayne Wallce, another Bay Area composer/teacher/performer. This year’s commission by the AAJC is a tribute to jazz legend Benny Carter. At last year’s tribute concert to Oscar Peterson in Toronto she was also the featured performer with the Historically Black College All Star Jazz Ensemble.

Audial Arkhitek of imajinn, Marcia Migét is actively involved in a number of unique music productions, i.e. incorporating animation with cross-cultural elements, designing and manufacturing creative and educational products for youth, as well as developing the Passing the Baton Project as Vice President of the Crown Family Unity Programs.
