excerpt. review from the Inner Circle 5/22/01

... and after listening to the recording 5 or 6 times, I still hear different parts, melodies, themes that mysteriously come to the forefront. There is so much music here that it just might be impossible to absorb everything in a few passes. I was allowed to sit in on the recording session; the musicians greeted each other, set up, recording levels were fixed, and the first 2 pieces were played. After lunch the last piece was performed.
There was little or no discussion about what was going to be attempted (odd time signatures were hinted at). Instead, the players relied on experience and their ears to guide them through the harmonic labyrinths and complex rhythmic patterns they were creating together. While it is a common practice in the jazz vocabulary to improvise, without any set ideas or a written starting place, the players are coming from different ages, cities, playing styles, and approaches to music which is another of many intriguing facets that make up this session.
